Filmed for a time at Riverside Studios and voted one of the BFI’s 100 Greatest Television Programme’s of the 20th Century, Z Cars ran on BBC Television between 1962 and 1978. The series was set in the fictional location of Newtown (somewhere north of Liverpool) and focussed on the work of a mobile police unit, including PC “Fancy” Smith (Brian Blessed).
This celebration includes two classic episodes made at Riverside Studios and a Q&A with actor Brian Blessed, who's long career includes roles in Flash Gordon, I, Claudius, Blackadder, Cats at the New London Theatre, Henry V, Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace and the voice of Clayton in Disney's Tarzan.
‘Suspended’ (1962, 50 mins)
‘In A Day’s Work’ (1964, 50 mins)
We are delighted that BBC presenter Matthew Sweet (host of BBC's Free Thinking and The Sound of Cinema) will be hosting the Q&A with Brian Blessed after the episodes screen. Matthew Sweet is author of Inventing the Victorians (2001), Shepperton Babylon (2005) and The West End Front (2011). A familiar voice in British broadcasting, he presents Free Thinking and Sound of Cinema on BBC Radio 3 and The Philosopher’s Arms on BBC Radio 4.
