Hard Boiled is often regarded as one of the greatest action films ever made with its influence extending well beyond Hong Kong cinema, impacting Hollywood action films and directors in the decades since its release in 1992. Hard Boiled is seen as a precursor to the modern action genre, influencing filmmakers like Quentin Tarantino and the Wachowskis, who have cited Woo's work as a significant influence on their own films. When asked by a studio executive whether John Woo could shoot action sequences, Quentin Taratino replied "Of course, and Michaelangelo can paint ceilings!"
