Board Statement

5 June 2020

The Board of the Riverside Trust has been reviewing the steps to be taken for Riverside Studios to reopen when it is safe to do so. Given the unprecedented new environment and the future challenges that Riverside faces, the Board has decided to put in place a new leadership structure to succeed William Burdett-Coutts, who has led Riverside Studios for the past 27 years as CEO & Artistic Director.

Tony Lankester, currently General Manager of Riverside, is to be Interim Executive Director; Guy Hornsby, who has been a senior executive at the Trust for 15 years, remains as Interim Director of Business and Finance; and Rachel Tackley, creative consultant and independent producer, will take on the role of interim Creative Director and lead the Trust’s programming team. Together with our remarkable staff, they will lead Riverside Studios through a period of considerable change as we adapt our artistic offerings and our premises to the post-Covid world and refocus on the Trust’s charitable purposes.

The Board extends its deep thanks to William for the significant contributions that he has made to the Trust as a creative leader over many years and particularly for his work in securing the agreements to construct the new Riverside Studios. William will continue to Chair RTVS, a major tenant of Riverside Studios, and will remain a formidable figure in the Riverside Studios' story. William remains an avid supporter of Riverside Studios and has offered to provide any help he can as a third party in what is going to be a very difficult time for all arts organisations.
