European Premiere From multi award-winning filmmaker Ben Weiland, the much anticipated “Island X” is a journey to the edge of the surf map and beyond. After losing his entire life’s work in a fire, renowned photographer Mark McInnis assembles a team of surfers, well versed in the art of cold water surf expeditions, (Pete Devries, Noah Wegrich, and Josh Mulcoy). Sworn to secrecy, they set out on a gruelling mission in search of inspiration and undiscovered waves in the violent, unpredictable Bering Sea.
With the guidance of local native Alaskan—Ricardo Merculief—who had been surfing perfect, empty waves alone for over a decade by himself on his family’s ancestral land, they explore the potential of this remote island. What they find are world-class waves that challenge their understanding of what is possible in one of the harshest environments on the planet and fresh hope for a photographer who thought he’d lost it all.
