Tashi Lhunpo Monastery UK Trust presents a
Special 35th Anniversary Screening of Galahad of Everest
Introduced by Brian Blessed OBE in conversation with Director John Paul Davidson
Galahad of Everest follows Brian Blessed’s attempt to climb Mount Everest in 1990 inspired by George Mallory, the British mountaineer who vanished near the summit in 1924.
Mallory was part of the early Royal Geographical Society/Alpine Club expeditions to Tibet in the 1920s, made possible through a diplomatic agreement between Sir Charles Bell, British Political Officer for Sikkim, Bhutan and Tibet, and the Great 13th Dalai Lama, who granted rare permission for British climbers to visit Chomolungma — Mount Everest’s Tibetan name – meaning 'Mother Goddess of the World'.
During the making of Galahad of Everest Brian filmed at Rongbuk Monastery and the ruins of Shekar Dzong, which was destroyed in the aftermath of the Chinese invasion of Tibet and the devastating Cultural Revolution. The documentary also features interviews with world-renowned mountaineers Sir Chris Bonington and Reinhold Messner, rare archive footage of Captain John Noel — official photographer on the 1924 Everest expedition — and Brian’s audience with His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama.
This special screening is part of the UK’s 'Year of Compassion', marking the 90th birthday of His Holiness the Dalai Lama. Proceeds from the screening will support the monks of Tashi Lhunpo Monastery, India.
