The debut film from Louise Courvoisier was the surprise hit of Cannes Film Festival last year, taking home the Youth Prize in Un Certain Regard. It followed that up by being the surprise hit at the box office in France, taking just shy of 1 million admissions in its first month of release in Dec 2024, beating both ANORA and THE SUBSTANCE.
Filmed entirely with a non-professional cast (and the director’s grandparents composing the soundtrack), HOLY COW gives us 18-year-old Totone, who spends most of his time drinking and partying in the Jura region of France. Reality catches up with him when he has to take care of his 7-year-old sister and find a way to make a living. He sets out to make the best Comté cheese in the region in an attempt to win the gold medal at the agricultural competition and 30,000 euros.
Expect a beautiful coming of age story in the sun-addled French countryside, with booze, sex, rascally characters and a surprising insight into the cheese making process!
