Kokona is a work that derived from physical and creative explorations around femininity, as a societal script, a concept, an amalgamation of sensations & energies. KOKONA was first presented as a short dance duet at The Place in London and then was reworked and developed into a full length piece that premiered in Sept 2024, in S.M De Lamas, Portugal.
On stage two bodies, whose similarities and differences shine through in different moments of the piece, explore themselves and each other. As if detached from the rest of the world and with only a few clues from what outer society is like, they set out to discover who and how they should be. The concept of femininity comes into play through this discovery; does it reside in social constructions or within our bodies, is it a set of unwritten laws constraining our naturally wild state of existence, or a powerfully freeing god-like energy transcending all bodies.
KOKONA derived from a series of explorations and ended up as an exploration in and of itself. The audience, whose presence has no effect on Kok and Kona’s realm, might have the experience of looking through the peephole into a world of experimentations and transformations.
Review from KOKONA premiere performance at SM de Lamas, Portugal:
‘Last night was synonymous with a packed house at Museu de Lamas, for one of the most innovative and disruptive shows on our lineup. Xavier De Santos and Delicia Sefiha unveiled a multifaceted creation that traversed the domains of performing art and dance, with deliberately thin balances between sound, touch and sensitivity.’
