Centred on the growing tensions between a screenwriter (Piccoli) and his wife (Bardot), as he labours on a film of Homer’s Odyssey directed by Fritz Lang but produced by a crass American (Palance), Godard’s film is both a study or marital breakdown and a critique of contemporary filmmaking practices. Beautifully performed, ravishingly shot by Raoul Coutard and superbly scored by Georges Delerue.
