Though the title alludes (not without reason) to Preston Sturges’ 1941 comedy Sullivan’s Travels, this wondrously witty, imaginative, partly musical transposition of Homer’s Odyssey to the Depression-era Deep South has vain Mississippi charmer Ulysses escaping a chain-gang to go in search of his far-from-faithful wife Penelope. Accompanied by two memorably dim friends, he encounters a colourful array of strangers both seductive and sinister.
