Winner - Best Director (Un Certain Regard) - Cannes Film Festival 2024

"Tremendous...this is palpably new, future-minded filmmaking" (Guy Lodge, Variety)

ON BECOMING A GUINEA FOWL is the masterful new film from Rungano Nyoni (I Am Not A Witch), released exclusively in cinemas on December 6th. Winner of Best Director (Un Certain Regard) at this year's Cannes, and recipient of a Special Mention at this year's competition strand of the BFI London Film Festival, On Becoming A Guinea Fowl is a terrific piece of filmmaking that cements Rungano Nyoni as a major talent on the British independent film scene.

Driving home one night in rural Zambia, Shula seems unfazed by the sight of her uncle’s dead body on the road. Later, while helping in funeral proceedings, her cool exterior melts as she questions her family’s complicity towards the abuse she and her cousins suffered. As made clear through this perceptive drama, silence breeds impunity. With touches of humour and surrealism, On Becoming a Guinea Fowl confirms Rungano Nyoni's position as one of her generation’s most distinctive voices.
