Pitchblack Playback's Best Albums Of 2023 series continues with a double-header featuring two of the UK's most innovative artists operating at the borders of electronica, modern soul and pop.
First up, James Blake's superb 'Playing Robots Into Heaven', which sees him return to the more experimental leanings of his earlier work with triumphant results. Then, Scottish trio Young Fathers' punchy, succinct, Mercury-nominated 'Heavy Heavy'—a riot of energetic styles which were backed by an explosive live show (recently garnering a 5* review from The Guardian at our neighbouring Hammersmith Apollo).
