Based on her book of the same name, Dr Rachel Knightley (Black Shuck Books, Hodder Education, The Writers’ Gym) leads four workshops solidifying the key skills of writing creatively – whether you’re focusing on fiction, memoir or any other genre or audience.
Week 1: Character and Plot
Who is at the heart of your story? What are the events – and who are the other people –that make them who they are? Explore the relationship between character and plot with creative exercises, prompts, discussion, tips and techniques.
Week 2: Description and Dialogue
Bring yourself and the reader closer to your world with realistic speech and individual sensory experience. How do our characters see, hear and taste their world? How do we show how what we think and feel contrasts with what we say and do?
Week 3: Structure and Setting
This session explores time and place in our writing and in how we order it for the reader. Experiment with chronology, suspense, and how we frame thought and action to build momentum in our stories.
Week 4: Editing, Rewriting, Publishing!
When is a story reader to send out into the world? How do we discover where are the natural homes for our voice, style and content? This week is about being your own first and best editor.
