"Faith, Tobey. Faith is what holds all of this together. If there is no faith, the command crumbles, the promise crumbles, the words crumble."
When a charismatic leader offers salvation from both internal and external demons, unquestioning loyalty seems like a small price to pay. But how tricky is the road to faith? Beyond simple declarations, faith must be excavated from the detritus of the everyday. Michael promises to show Tobey the way to salvation. Offering a stern and honeyed tongue, he seems like the answer to Tobey's prayers. But how far will faith reach? Are extreme acts committed under the moniker of belief exempt from punishment? How personal is each of our salvations?
Road to Judecca began as Nicholas Alder's research into how the four modalities of Lutheran prayer can function in an actor's process, during their time at Birmingham Conservatory. Now in London, the single actor play has developed into a study on how faith can be simultaneously illuminating as well as blinding. Considering how charismatic leaders are capable of using faith to their advantage, as well as a study into the deep desire of each of us to believe and through belief belong, Road to Judecca combines theology, social commentary, and prayer to ask how much do the words matter, and how much the intention behind them?
