How do you ask the questions you never got to ask? How do you hold onto a cultural heritage that is fading?
Blending fact and fiction, Romanian Memories is a short film which repurposes Super 8 home footage from 1930's Romania to playfully remember a family history that is at risk of disappearing.
Olivia Neilson unearths her great-grandfather’s glorious footage from 30’s Bucharest to create this short film. Using ahead of his time camera techniques going far beyond the ‘home video’, Roland Villemur swirls his camera around traditional ceremonies and weddings to crowds welcoming royalty, offering us a rare glimpse into everyday life in Romania at a time which was scarcely caught on camera.
Taking inspiration from conversations with her own mother and grandfather, Neilson spins some truth out of these anecdotal stories, piecing them together alongside the footage to preserve a family archive and a unique perspective on Romanian history.
This film is in French with English subtitles. Tickets are free just require registration.
