Riverside Studios, the BFI and the Jeremy Brett Sherlock Holmes Podcast are excited to bring you a special set of screenings to celebrate the 40th Anniversary of Granada’s definitive Sherlock Holmes series, starring the iconic Jeremy Brett. We have chosen two exceptional examples of the quality of the show to share with you, starting with the first ever episode filmed (not screened) “The Solitary Cyclist” followed by an episode from the later series “The Devil’s Foot” which has many moments that have become distinct in the minds of all fans of the series.
“The Solitary Cyclist,” was the fourth episode to be shown on TV in 1984, but was actually the first filmed. It is extraordinary to see a show hit the ground running with such competence thanks to director Paul Annett and producer Michael Cox, with both Jeremy Brett and David Burke finding their characters and compatibility so quickly.
“The Devil’s Foot” formed part of The Return series in 1988, which had a new Watson in Edward Hardwicke and a new producer in June Wyndham-Davies, yet it had not lost any of the quality of the original 13 episodes.
Each screening will be followed by a Q&A with creatives who brought the show to the screen, and at the end there will be a chance to meet the guests in the foyer (some charges may apply).
Current guests confirmed:
Barbara Wilshere (Violet Smith in The Solitary Cyclist)
Gary Hopkins (Writer of The Devil’s Foot)
Esther Dean (Costume Designer on The Solitary Cyclist)
Stafford Gordon (Landlord in The Solitary Cyclist)
Josh Dynevor (Floor Manager on The Devil’s Foot)
The Jeremy Brett Sherlock Holmes Podcast was started in 2019 by brothers Gus & Luke Holwerda and is devoted to revisiting and honoring the world’s greatest portrayal of the world’s greatest detective. They are now joined by Producer David Youell, and recently held their own event to commemorate the 40th anniversary attended by over 100 people and raising £2.2k for Mind UK in Jeremy’s name.
Gus and Luke will be in attendance and will be our hosts for the panel discussions.
