The story tells of the rise in the Neapolitan Mafia (Camorra) of Vito Polara, a ruthless and ambitious young man who successfully confronts the local boss of the fruit and vegetable market, Salvatore Aiello. Aiello lets him join the organization, but when Vito deliberately ignores his orders a second time, he's shot down. Francesco Rosi's first film gives an almost prophetically clear and devastating picture of the Neapolitan underworld and the power of the Camorra.
