THE TREE OF AUTHENTICITY examines the ecological and human impact of Belgian colonialism in the Democratic Republic of Congo. The film uses voices from the colonial era, specifically the journals of scientists Paul Panda Farnana and Abiron Beirnaert, to explore how the pursuit of profit led to environmental destruction and social injustice. Through a blend of historical accounts, scientific analysis, and meditative visuals of present-day Congo, Baloji connects the colonial past to the present.
