Azhar, a noble and dedicated Muslim man, is preparing for his nikah/walima. As he focuses on completing his deen, he bumps into Rahim, a troubled Muslim man who has recently been abandoned by his family for coming out as gay, and is searching for solace and answers in the Mosque.

As the two get closer, Azhar realises that he has grown romantic feelings for his new companion, and is forced to confront the reality of the life he has been given. The pair question if it is okay to be gay and a Muslim, and the social pressures, religious guilt, family expectations, and personal sacrifices that may come with it.

We Can’t Be Friends is an exploration of deen vs dunya, and whether the sacrifices made in this lifetime are worth the unconfirmed rewards in the next. It is a story about what to do when the world has chosen your path for you, and the struggles of faith, self-exploration, and companionship.

This is a sharing of a new play that has been selected as part of Riverside Studios' Research and Development Scheme.
