Benjamin Zephaniah knew Riverside Studios as a “home from home”. As a young writer, he recognised Riverside as one of the few places to welcome and help nurture Black artists and, subsequently, he saw his first plays – Playing the Right Tune (1985) and Job Rocking (1987) - workshopped and performed here.
He wrote thirty books of poetry, nonfiction, stories for adults, teens and children and several plays. He released seven albums of original music and acted in such TV productions as The Comic Strip Presents... and Peaky Blinders.
In early 2023, Benjamin returned to Riverside for An Evening with..., at which he delighted a sold-out audience with his wit, talent and unique perspective.
Benjamin’s untimely death in December last year, prompted an outpouring of respect and affection. In recognition of his importance to Riverside Studios, we are proud to stage an evening of readings, recollections, and archival images, paying tribute to one of the world’s most singular voices.
Performers include Kid Anansi, Elisha Gabb, Sarah Hehir, Anoushka Lucas, Nadine Gray, Trevor Laird, Amy True, Sonia Konate, Simon Burrowes, Kadija Sesay and Yaz Alexander (all subject to change).
Please Note: Tickets - limited to two per person - are free on a first come, first served basis. If, after signing up for tickets, you cannot attend the event, please notify Box Office as soon as possible so that others may benefit. Thank you.
With thanks to Qian Zephaniah and the family of Benjamin Zephaniah.
